P A T R I C K     D I N N E E N

I’m from Cork but have been living in beautiful Galway, West Ireland for the past 12 years. My favourite style of photography is Δߊ†®∀©† (abstract). I believe I have a natural talent for creating an original and memorable abstract photo from a scene that others would overlook.

There’s more to me than just photography-
I’m happily married and have 3 beautiful kids.
I did a terrifying bungee jump on my honeymoon; it could have been a very short marriage!
When not behind a camera I love music (think Pixies, The National, Morrissey, They Might Be Giants etc), reading, sports and Ben & Jerrys ice cream.
Besides photography I love football (Cork City and long time Chelsea fan) and cycling

WHY ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY?

I began, like most photographers, capturing anything and everything that caught my eye. But after time I noticed that my favourite photos tended to be abstract. Today everything has been photographed to death and the majority of photographs, no matter how good,  look very similar.

I enjoy the challenge of trying to capture original and interesting abstract photos. Many of my photos burst with strong colours which reflect my happy, outgoing personality.

I have another, more general photography website http://www.photoblog.ie, which contains an eclectic mix of styles.

My photographs have been features in the LA Times and my portfolio featured in Amateur Photographer magazine and in several exhibitions in Ireland.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT

(the boring stuff if you’re not a photographer)

I shoot with a Pentax K-5ii DSLR and Pentax K-7 as a backup. A lot of people are surprised and ask why a Pentax, or rather ask why not a Canon or Nikon? Pentax make extremely good cameras that have in-body stabilization. When deciding on a brand Pentax felt right in my hands.

I also keeps a compact camera on-hand/in the car in case I spot a potentially great photo opportunity. To quote a famous photography phrase- “the best camera in the world is the one you have on you.”

LENSES

  • Sigma 70-200 f2.8 Sports lens. To be honest I don’t use it extensively but it gives me a comforting feeling just knowing I own this stunning lens.
  • Tamron 18-55 f2.8 lens
  • Pentax 100mm f2.8 1:1 macro lens
  • Sigma 30mm f1.4 lens. This is great for low-light photography and blurred background photos (think portraits).
  • I uses a Slingshot AW 202 rucksack. It’s like a mini rucksack which can swing around to the front of your body very quickly without having to take it off. I highly recommended it.
